Although I'm far from prolific (especially nowadays) I sometimes dabble in writing short stories. Most of the time I don't finish them. The few I've managed to complete are on display in this section. I hope you enjoy reading them, and would appreciate any comments!

Taipan

Set in the near future, a community of hackers are forced to download and install "Taipan" to keep their website online. Taipan appears to be a total success, but when website visitors begin to undergo a dramatic change in personality it emerges that Taipan is as deadly as it's namesake. Mind control seems to be the true purpose, but whocan prove it when the only people capable of unlocking it's secrets are under it's control?

This was the first short story that I have managed to complete for a very long time. It has taken a long time to write this story. I had the idea a long time ago, and there were many false starts along the way. I found it hard to come up with a way to begin the story. I had almost completed one version when the file became corrupt and unusable, forcing me to begin again. In the end, I wrote the story as a piece of fanfiction for the Life, The Universe and Everything message board, and used events there to give a skeleton to hang my idea upon. The second draft extended upon the first considerably. The word count increased from 2500 to almost 6000. This version was much better than the original, but it still needed work. The beginning in particular required a lot of rewriting, but I think it turned out OK. The ending is a little weak, but it's still enjoyable enough.

You know it's a good idea, it's from The Ideas Factory!

After the long, difficult process of writing Taipan, The Ideas Factory was something of a relief. I had the idea and wrote the whole thing in one afternoon. Unfortunately, this story has been heavily criticised for its lack of action and overly complicated language. This is the version produced as a result of the advice that I received. It's a better story, although it quickly loses it's way after the beginning. I think this story needs to be either much shorter or much longer than it is. There's too much rushed, too much lingered over unnecessarily. I'd like to attempt a rewrite of this story someday, as I really do like the idea

Sweet Tea

Dean Goddard hates his wife. Having finally grown weary of waiting for her disease to end her life, he decides to do it himself. Is there such a thing as "too careful" when planning a murder?

This is a relatively short short story, a simple tale of a would-be murder and a problem of methodology. I think this is my best story by far, and I'm really pleased by how it turned out. My main problem was that the central idea of the story relies upon the main character doing something rather illogical, and I couldn't really find a convincing explanation about WHY he took that decision.
