I'm chipping away slowly at my tour. I wouldn't say it's fun, but it's had interesting moments. I'm actually not doing my regular IT job. The role out here is more end-user focused, so it's been challenging for a misanthrope like me. Still, I think my technical skills have just about made up for my lack of people skills. If it hasn't, who gives a toss? They're only officers.
I don't think I've done half bad so far, in all honesty. I'm not so good and not so keen at the front desk side of life, but I haven't embarrassed myself too badly too often. It's all brownie points, too. There's even a few hints that I might actually get promoted this time round. I'm not holding my breath, but if I did get it I'd probably stay in the Army longer. I don't actually ENJOY the army too much, but it's an easy life. I'll do a lot for an easy life. It'd make my plan to buy a house go a little more smoothly too.
I'm thinking of flying out to the states to visit some friends early next year. It'd be pretty exciting, as I've always wanted to got America and these are good peoples. I expect the Army will be ****s about giving me the leave, unfortunately. I've already got bonus leave saved over from last year to take, but I bet they STILL insist that I can only take leave during the authorised periods. Another reason I don't like the Army, but what the hell. If it were FUN, they wouldn't need to pay me.
